Rules Quiz from USGA |
| Q.
Before playing his tee shot at the par-3 4th hole, John uses
his marking pen to draw a solid line completely around the
equator of his ball. He lifts a broken and abandoned tee from
the ground and tees his ball on it. John’s tee shot comes to
rest on the fringe of the putting green.
In preparation for his chip shot, John asks
his opponent in the match, Steve, to attend the flagstick.
Steve attends the flagstick and John chips to three feet. John
marks the position of his ball using his pitch-mark repair
tool and lifts the ball. Steve, whose ball is on the fringe of
the green, tells John to replace his ball in the belief that
the Rules allow the player’s opponent to impose such a
requirement. John refuses to replace his ball before Steve
plays. Steve chips his ball to a position four feet from the
hole.
While Steve putts, John wipes the mud off of
his ball using Steve’s towel. Steve holes his putt but does
not remove his ball from the hole. John replaces his ball with
the line that he drew positioned such that it helps him aim
his putt and holes out, in one more stroke, with Steve’s
ball in the hole.
What penalties has John incurred in the play
of this hole?
A. None.

Misconception: A line drawn on the ball may
not encircle the circumference of the ball and a mark placed
on the ball may not be used to assist with aiming.
Rules 6-5 and 12-2 encourage the player to
place an identifying mark on the ball; there are no
restrictions on the type of identifying mark the player
employs. Decision 20-3a/2 explains that a player may, when
placing his ball, align the trademark to indicate his line
of play. Using the identifying mark in this manner is also
permitted
Misconception: Players may not use another
player’s tee or towel as the player would be in breach of
the Rules regarding the use of another player’s equipment.
Rule 4-4 explains the restrictions against
using another player’s clubs. However, the use of another
player’s tee, towel, golf ball, pencil etc. is not a
breach of a Rule – see Decision 5-1/5.
Misconception: A player may not have the
flagstick attended when his ball does not lie on the putting
green.
Rule 17-1 explicitly states that the player
may, prior to his stroke, have the flagstick attended
regardless of the part of the course on which his ball lies.
Misconception: The position of a ball may
only be marked by using a small coin.
The Note to Rule 20-1 recommends that the
position of a ball be marked using a small coin or similar
object; however, a player may mark the position of his ball
using any object – see Decision 20-1/16.
Misconception: In match play, the player’s
opponent “controls the player’s ball” on the putting
green.
From 1956 to 1983, the Rules of Golf allowed
the player’s opponent to require the player to replace his
ball when it had been lifted from the putting green. Since
the 1984 revision of the Rules of Golf, this is no longer
the case.
Misconception: A ball may not be holed out
with another ball in the hole.
Nothing in the Rules of Golf prohibits a
player from holing out his ball while another ball is at
rest in the hole. In the situation described above,
Etiquette dictates that Steve remove his ball before John
plays but neither player is in breach of a Rule.

| READY
GOLF |
Survey
says, number one golf complaint, takes too long. It's torture
to either be in or behind a group that takes 5 plus hours to
play 18 holes. There are steps that all players can take to
complete a round in a more reasonable time.
 | Even
though rules state that the person with the lowest score
from the prior hole tees off first, and that the person
furthest from the hole goes first, "ready golf"
is acceptable etiquette within safety guidelines, of
course. Unless you're in a tournament, there is no reason
why you can't tee off first if you're the first to the
tee. It's always good to talk this over beforehand and
make sure your playing partners agree.
|
 | Write your
scores down on the scorecard in the cart or at the next
tee, not on the green you just finished.
|
 | Same thing
with head covers, put them on in the cart and put the club
in the bag on exiting the cart prior to your next shot.
The pageantry of replacing the head cover as practiced by
some golfers can drive you nuts.
|
 | If two to
a cart, drop the rider off at their ball and have the
driver proceed to his/her ball.
|
 | Always
take enough clubs for the shot that might be encountered.
If you think it's a 7-iron into the green, take your 6, 7,
and 8-iron with you.
|
 | When near
the green, drop off the person furthest from the hole
first, then go park the cart on the cart path near the
green.
|
 | When near
the green, take your putter, as well as your wedge.
|
 | Always
carry a second ball in your pocket just in case you lose
the original ball or need to hit a provisional ball. It
saves the time that would be wasted going back to your
cart to dig another ball out of your bag.
|
 | Try to
remember at least approximately where you hit the ball.
|
 | If you
can't find the ball rather quickly, drop and press on.
|
 | Golf is
golf, fishing is fishing, on busy days, leave the ball
retriever at home and press on. Heck a ball retriever,
might as well bring scuba gear if fishing balls is your
thing!
|
 | No more
than two practice swings.
|
 | Develop a
quick routine, not a quick swing.
|
 | Don't try
your pick-up lines on the cart girl, wastes time and you
have a much better chance of making an eagle. |
